The first Wrestlemania took place in 1985 at Madison Square Garden with Hulk Hogan and Mr. T. Long before these men defined modern wrestling entertainment, Jacob the Cheater wrestled with God (Genesis 32).

What was Jacob thinking? This is the guy who fooled his brother and deceived his father. He was a trickster and a swindler throughout his life. And then one day he picked a fight with God. What’s up with that?

Wounded from the experience, Jacob limped the rest of his life. Frederick Buechner characterizes Jacob’s divine encounter at the Jabbok River as the “magnificent defeat of the human soul at the hands of God.” Jacob lost but he lived, and his life was never the same.
