It’s no small thing for Jesus to declare, “I AM the light of the world.” The statement alone suggests we live in a dark world, stained by sin and rebellion against Almighty God.
Any moment during a twenty-four hour news cycle is convincing proof of the looming darkness. Murderers and thieves, rapists and child abusers, terrorists, wars, and rumors of wars—when will it ever end? Honesty compels us to admit there are dark places in our own heart and that sometimes we allow ourselves to go there (Jeremiah 17:9).
Our only hope is this: “In him was life, and the life was the light of men.The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness does not overcome it” (John 1:4-5).
