Shortly after Saul’s Damascus Road experience, the Lord said to Ananias, “[Saul] is a chosen instrument of mine to carry my name before the Gentiles and kings and the children of Israel. For I will show him how much he must suffer for the sake of my name” (Acts 9:15-16).

The cost of discipleship is something every Christian must calculate. Eternal life is free (Romans 6:23), but following Jesus is pricey. Jesus made this clear by associating the cross (certain and painful death) and self-denial with following Him. In Luke 9:24, the Savior said pointedly, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.”

Like the Apostle Paul, have you calculated the high cost of following Jesus?
