No theological debate is more important than the one about the purity of the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ. The gospel of salvation by grace alone, and through faith alone in Jesus Christ was at the center of theological debate two thousand years ago, and still is.

How did the early church leaders resolve their differences with those who opposed the gospel? They settled their theological disputes in the same way Michelangelo sculpted David: They chipped away everything that didn’t look like Jesus, like all the works demanded by the Mosaic law.

Anything worth believing is certainly worth our deep reflection. Honest theological debate can and should sharpen our understanding of holy Scripture while sweetening the fellowship Christians enjoy in Jesus.
