Try placing a handful of marbles in your mouth and then delivering an important speech. You would sound like a garbled mess. Respected theologian J.I. Packer said, “The church mumbles on about God’s kindness but says virtually nothing about his judgment.”

The prophet Nahum never mumbled his words, especially about the wrath of God. Instead, with holy clarity, he proclaimed a divine verdict upon the evil Ninevites, to whom Jonah preached more than one hundred years earlier. There was no mumbling in the short but seething oracle Nahum delivered about their eventual doom.

Do you have marbles in your mouth? When it comes to proclaiming the kindness and severity of God, the church should never be silent. Nor should we ever mumble for God.
