Ben Franklin said, “I never knew a man who was good at making excuses who was good at anything else.” That rings true enough for me and for an Old Testament Minor Prophet named Haggai.

God sent Haggai with a message for the people of Israel to stop making excuses and finish rebuilding the house of the Lord (1:2). He also challenged their misplaced priorities. “Is it time for you yourselves to dwell in your paneled houses, while this house lies in ruins?” (1:4)

Jesus said, “Seek first the kingdom of heaven and his righteousness, and all these things will be added unto you” (Matthew 6:33). What’s your excuse for not putting God first and for not finishing what He told you to start?
