There’s a good reason haughty eyes are at the top of the list of “six things the Lord hates, yes, seven which are an abomination to him” (Proverbs 6:16-17). “Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall” (Proverbs 16:18).

This was what led to king Nebuchadnezzar’s Humpty Dumpty-like fall. One starry night, he looked out over his balcony and said, “Is not this the great Babylon I have built as a royal residence, by my mighty power and for the glory of my majesty?” (Daniel 4:30).

The words were still on the king’s lips when the Lord inflicted him with insanity. A good reminder that “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble” (Proverbs 3:34).
