Jesus said, “I will build my church and the gates of hell will not prevail against it” (Matthew 16:18). Do you believe that? The Acts of the Apostles give us all the evidence we need that Jesus meant exactly what He said, even when fierce opposition came against the early church.

For example, in Acts chapter 5, the high priest arrested the apostles and threw them into prison. But that night the angel of the Lord opened the prison door and let them out. When the Jewish council found them and confronted them about their teaching, Peter replied, “We must obey God rather than men” (Acts 5:29).

Circle the word “must” and remember this: fierce opposition is no match for gospel determination.
