God's Messengers in the Nativity

In Frank Capra’s Christmas movie classic called It’s A Wonderful Life, Henry Travers plays a guardian angel named Clarence who still lacks wings. Heaven assigns him to stop George Bailey, a struggling banker played by actor Jimmy Stewart, from ending his life on Christmas Eve.

Are guardian angels for real? Have you been touched by a Christmas angel? To many people, angels are mysterious beings. Overall, Hollywood has contributed poorly to our understanding of angels by portraying these special emissaries from heaven in ways the Bible hardly recognizes.

In the real Christmas story, God’s messengers in the nativity comforted fears, protected Mary and Joseph, heralded peace on earth, taught us to rejoice, modeled praise, delivered good news, and pointed us to Jesus.
