"Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God. . . . The one who does not love does not know God, for God is love" (1 John 4:7-8).

The apostle John who penned these words must have learned this from Jesus. He saw him love others. He also heard him say, "Love your enemies, and pray for those who persecute you" (Matthew 5:44). It's easy to love the lovely. But try loving your enemy without God's help.

Love is the bright north star of the Christian life. More than anything else, love says we are followers of Jesus.  The old song is still true. "They will know we are Christians by our love."
