At the risk of generalizing too much, I believe a man’s greatest need is for significance and a woman’s greatest need is for security. This is why the Bible tells wives to respect their husbands and for husbands to love their wives as Christ loved the church, sacrificing for her salvation and security.

Ephesians chapter 5 also says that the “husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church.” Biblical headship is about a husband leading and protecting his wife.

In the language of the Song of Solomon, Shulamith says, “his banner over me was love” (SOS 2:4). His love made her feel safe and secure.
