Scripture Reading

Isaiah 9:1-7

Devotional

Prince of Peace

By Dr. Ron Jones

The peaceful hope of every Jew is found in an ancient prophecy found in Isaiah chapter nine. It speaks of a time when a future world leader known as Messiah will govern this earth, not from Washington DC but from the holy city Jerusalem.

“Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end” (Isaiah 9:7). In other words, get ready for big government, but not the kind that makes you suffer under a heavy burden. Messiah is no despot or dictator but a Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, and Prince of Peace.

“The government shall be upon his shoulder,” and He will rule “with justice and with righteousness.” Now that’s the kind of big government I’d even vote for.

Reflection Question

Read Romans 5:1 and Philippians 4:6-7. What two kinds of peace are mentioned in these verses? How does one get such peace?

“Every detail in our lives of love for God is worked into something good.”

Romans 8:28 MSG
