Not long ago, environmentalists visited St. Petersburg, Russia and were shocked to discover brownish-yellow water flowing from their taps. Eventually, they discovered that untreated sewage was flowing into the Neva River a few hundred yards upstream from the intake pipes for the city’s drinking water.

Like the toxic contaminants that polluted the drinking water in St. Petersburg and made the people who drank it unhealthy, the sinful pollutants of this world make us spiritually unhealthy and unholy.

What health is to the body, holiness is to the soul. The apostle Peter says, “As he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, since it is written, ‘You shall be holy, for I am holy’” (1 Peter 1:14-16).
