While rummaging through the Temple, Hilkiah the priest found an old, dusty copy of the Book of the Law of the Lord given to Moses and brought it to King Josiah. The subsequent reading of God’s word cut the king’s heart and sparked a revival that lasted for decades.

The word of God always plays a central role in revival. When revival happens, people return to God and to God’s word. One of Israel’s revivalists named Isaiah writes, “The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God will stand forever” (Isaiah 40:6-8).

So, we can either build our lives on withering grass and fading flowers, or we can build our lives on the enduring word of God.
