From the beginning God planned that you and I would live forever with him. He put eternity in our hearts to remind us of that and to create in us a thirst for the transcendent (Ecclesiastes 3:11). The meaninglessness of life evaporates when we know we are part of God’s eternal plan.

Eternity, however, is a difficult concept to grasp. Try wrapping your brain around the word “forever” and you might pull a muscle in your mind. The Psalmist writes, “From everlasting to everlasting you are God” (90:2). The eternal nature of God is truly a mind-blowing idea.

One of my favorite theologians named Buzz Lightyear came close to capturing the concept of eternity when he said, “To infinity and beyond!”
