Does God hear and answer prayers? At the risk of oversimplifying the way prayer works, I suggest the following general categories of divine response.

  • If the request is not right, God says no.
  • If the time is not right, God says slow.
  • If you are not right, God says grow.
  • When all is right, God says go.

A more detailed study of God’s word reveals many hindrances to answered prayer, including unconfessed sin, prayerlessness, selfishness, and a lack of faith. But wait. There’s more. A lack of persistence, broken relationships, indifference to God’s word, and indifference to the poor can also close God’s ears to our prayers.

Prayer is communication with God. But for prayer to work, we must pray God’s way.
