The apostle Paul has Old Testament pottery imagery in mind when he writes, “But we have this treasure in jars of clay, to show that the surpassing power belongs to God and not to us” (2 Corinthians 4:7).

God is the Potter and we are the clay.

Read the Bible and you’ll discover imperfect heroes of the faith that possessed deep personal flaws, made mistakes, and struggled to do what is right in God’s eyes. In short, they were all broken vessels.

“Jars of clay” is an apt way to describe our humanity. It suggests we are beautiful and functional, but we are also weak and easily broken into pieces. We are formidable and fragile at the same time. In two words, we are cracked pots.
