My uncle Steve worked for the Indiana Highway Department as a civil engineer. Whenever we journeyed by car across the Hoosier state, I often wondered if his engineering skills had helped construct the interstate highway on which we were traveling at high speeds.

Isaiah 40 pictures our God traveling on a superhighway to revive us. “A voice cries: ‘In the wilderness prepare the way of the Lord; make straight in the desert a highway for our God.’” John the Baptist drew upon these prophetic words and applied them to his ministry.

Engineering a revival is the sovereign work of God. But we have a part to play by lifting up the low places, bringing low the high places, straightening out the crooked places, and smoothing over the rough places in our life.
